NFTs and Token Metadata on Solana 2026

Metaplex is the protocol that supplies Solana’s metadata layer — the programs that attach a name, symbol, image and creator information to a token or NFT. This matters far beyond NFTs, because the SPL Token Program itself stores none of that: a mint records supply, decimals and authorities, and nothing else. Every memecoin ticker and logo you have ever seen in a wallet comes from a Metaplex metadata account sitting alongside the mint. That separation is also why token names can be changed after launch, and why the ticker is not an identifier.

Key Facts

The SPL Token Program stores no name, symbol or image — Metaplex Token Metadata provides all of it.

Metadata lives in a separate account derived from the mint address.

If update authority is not revoked, name, symbol and image can be changed at any time.

Bubblegum enables compressed NFTs, storing them in Merkle trees for a fraction of normal rent.

Core is Metaplex’s newer standard, holding an NFT in a single account instead of several.

Candy Machine handles NFT mint distribution and launch mechanics.

Token-2022 can store metadata inside the mint itself, offering an alternative for new tokens.

Why Tokens Need a Separate Metadata Account

Solana’s design keeps programs stateless and puts data in accounts, so an SPL token mint holds only the numeric facts about supply and authority. Nothing in it says “BONK” or points at a picture of a dog. When wallets and explorers display those things, they are reading a Metaplex metadata account whose address is derived deterministically from the mint.

That derivation is what makes the system work without a registry. Any interface can compute where a token’s metadata should be and look it up, with no central list to maintain. It also means metadata is optional — a mint with no metadata account is a perfectly valid token that simply displays as an unnamed address in every wallet.

What Metaplex Actually Provides

Component

What it does

Who it matters to

Token Metadata

Name, symbol, image URI, creators, update authority

Every token and NFT on Solana

Bubblegum

Compressed NFTs stored in Merkle trees

Large mints where per-item rent would be prohibitive

Core

Single-account NFT standard, cheaper and simpler

New NFT projects

Candy Machine

Mint distribution, allowlists, launch phases

NFT launches

Inscriptions

Storing data fully on-chain rather than by URI

Projects wanting no external dependency

Compression is the piece with the widest impact. Under the standard model each NFT needs its own accounts and therefore its own rent, which makes a million-item collection economically impossible. Bubblegum stores the collection in a Merkle tree with only the root on-chain, cutting the cost per item by orders of magnitude — the same insight behind why per-account rent exists at all, applied in reverse to avoid it.

The Mutability Problem

Every metadata account has an update authority. If it has not been revoked, whoever holds it can change the token’s name, symbol and image whenever they like — and the mint address stays the same throughout, so nothing about the token’s identity on-chain appears to change.

This is the mechanism behind one of the more effective scams on Solana: a dormant token minted a year ago is renamed overnight to impersonate whatever is trending, arriving with a long transaction history that reads as legitimacy. That is a specific case of the broader problem covered in why tickers are not identifiers, and the check is the same — read the metadata account’s update authority on Solscan, and treat a live authority on a token claiming to be established as a contradiction worth resolving before buying.

Where the Image Actually Lives

Metadata stores a URI, not the image itself, and that URI usually points to Arweave, IPFS or an ordinary web server. Arweave and IPFS are reasonably durable; a web server is not, which is why some older tokens display broken images — the mint is fine, the hosting expired. Metaplex Inscriptions exists to close that gap by putting data fully on-chain, at proportionally higher cost. When a token’s logo fails to load on DEXScreener or in a wallet, this is almost always the reason rather than anything wrong with the token.

What Metaplex Means for $DOLAN

DOLAN Duck ($DOLAN) displays its name and duck image in every wallet because of a Metaplex metadata account attached to mint 4YK1njyeCkBuXG6phNtidJWKCbBhB659iwGkUJx98P5Z — the fixed 98.3M supply and roughly 10,700 holders are token program facts, while everything you actually see is metadata. The practical check that follows applies to any Solana token: look at whether the metadata is immutable, because a token whose name and image can be rewritten is a token whose branding is a claim rather than a fact. Combined with verifying the mint address itself, that covers both halves of what a token is — the numbers underneath and the label on top.

Related Guides

What Is Helius? It supplies the name, symbol, image and creator information that the SPL Token Program itself does not store.

Is Metaplex only for NFTs?
No. Every SPL token relies on Metaplex Token Metadata for its name, symbol and logo. Without it a token displays as an unnamed mint address in every wallet and explorer.

Can a token’s name and image be changed?
Yes, if the update authority on the metadata account has not been revoked.
